Analyst: Social Game Revenues To Hit $1.3B In 2010

Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian shared several predictions for the social gaming market based on data provided by CrowdStar chairman Peter Relan, including insights on Facebook Credits, Apple's iPad, and his firm's forecast that worldwide social game revenues (virtual goods, advertising, and offers) will nearly double in 2010 to $1.3 billion.

In a conference call with LCM, Relan noted that 1-3 percent of social game users convert to paying customers, and that the top paying demographic for CrowdStar's Happy Aquarium consists of women aged 35 and up. Based on that information, Sebastian commented, "We believe that there is significant runway remaining for social games to grow assuming continued distribution growth (on Facebook, smartphones, browsers and other social networks) and increasing conversion rates in other demographic groups."

Relan indicated that social game developers will continue to focus on producing their titles for Facebook due to its scale, grown, and monetization potential, while the iPhone will serve as a platform for "product extension" opportunities, at least until there is more functionality for microtransactions and virtual goods on the handset. He added that he expects to migrate CrowdStar's iPhone games to the iPad, and that the larger screen will encourage "a new breed of casual and social game applications."

In regards to Facebook Credits, Sebastien advised investors to expect the widespread launch of the social network's universal virtual currency. He noted, "The launch of FB Credits is expected to generate a sizeable take rate for Facebook in the 30 percent range vs. 5 percent - 10percent for alternative payment options." CrowdStar, which uses the payment platform, however, expects that "diminishing payment friction and increasing conversion rates will ultimately offset the loss in revenues."

Sebastien noted that console games might not be as relevant in the social space, and that console-to-social ports could be risky considering the differences in user demographics: "Social game users care more about the social mechanics of a game instead of the depth and quality of game play, which is inverse to console game players. Other than EA, we note that legacy game publishers have very little penetration in the social networking segment of the market and are likely to invest in these platforms this year.

The analyst also warned against application fatigue, citing it as a "key risk" for social game developers and publishers to keep in mind. "Given the relatively simple game play, the sometimes fickle users, and the social dynamics of the game play, application fatigue is a key risk for social game companies unless companies focus more on innovation and game quality," he said.

Crescita fortissima e superiore alle attese per il Pil Usa nel quarto trimestre dell'anno: il dato comunicato dal Dipartimento del Commercio è di un aumento del 5,7%, mentre i più recenti sondaggi fra gli economisti avevano previsto un +4,8. Nel terzo trimestre la crescita era stata del 2,2%, dopo un anno di contrazione. Nonostante quest'ultimo dato così elevato, comunque, nell'intero 2009 la crescita è stata negativa per il 2,4%, la maggiore contrazione del pil americano in un anno dal 1946, quando il crollo fu del 10,9%.

Questa sera ho riletto e riascoltato per radio la lettera che ha scritto il dott. Pier Luigi Celli al proprio figlio.

"Figlio mio, lascia questo Paese"

Figlio mio, stai per finire la tua Università; sei stato bravo. Non ho rimproveri da farti. Finisci in tempo e bene: molto più di quello che tua madre e io ci aspettassimo. È per questo che ti parlo con amarezza, pensando a quello che ora ti aspetta. Questo Paese, il tuo Paese, non è più un posto in cui sia possibile stare con orgoglio.

Puoi solo immaginare la sofferenza con cui ti dico queste cose e la preoccupazione per un futuro che finirà con lo spezzare le dolci consuetudini del nostro vivere uniti, come è avvenuto per tutti questi lunghi anni. Ma non posso, onestamente, nascondere quello che ho lungamente meditato.

Ti conosco abbastanza per sapere quanto sia forte il tuo senso di giustizia, la voglia di arrivare ai risultati, il sentimento degli amici da tenere insieme, buoni e meno buoni che siano. E, ancora, l'idea che lo studio duro sia la sola strada per renderti credibile e affidabile nel lavoro che incontrerai.

Ecco, guardati attorno. Quello che puoi vedere è che tutto questo ha sempre meno valore in una Società divisa, rissosa, fortemente individualista, pronta a svendere i minimi valori di solidarietà e di onestà, in cambio di un riconoscimento degli interessi personali, di prebende discutibili; di carriere feroci fatte su meriti inesistenti. A meno che non sia un merito l'affiliazione, politica, di clan, familistica: poco fa la differenza.

Questo è un Paese in cui, se ti va bene, comincerai guadagnando un decimo di un portaborse qualunque; un centesimo di una velina o di un tronista; forse poco più di un millesimo di un grande manager che ha all'attivo disavventure e fallimenti che non pagherà mai.

E' anche un Paese in cui, per viaggiare, devi augurarti che l'Alitalia non si metta in testa di fare l'azienda seria chiedendo ai suoi dipendenti il rispetto dell'orario, perché allora ti potrebbe capitare di vederti annullare ogni volo per giorni interi, passando il tuo tempo in attesa di una informazione (o di una scusa) che non arriverà.

E d'altra parte, come potrebbe essere diversamente, se questo è l'unico Paese in cui una compagnia aerea di Stato, tecnicamente fallita per non aver saputo stare sul mercato, è stata privatizzata regalandole il Monopolio, e così costringendo i suoi vertici alla paralisi di fronte a dipendenti che non crederanno mai più di essere a rischio.

Credimi, se ti guardi intorno e se giri un po', non troverai molte ragioni per rincuorarti. Incapperai nei destini gloriosi di chi, avendo fatto magari il taxista, si vede premiato - per ragioni intuibili - con un Consiglio di Amministrazione, o non sapendo nulla di elettricità, gas ed energie varie, accede imperterrito al vertice di una Multiutility.

Non varrà nulla avere la fedina immacolata, se ci sono ragioni sufficienti che lavorano su altri terreni, in grado di spingerti a incarichi delicati, magari critici per i destini industriali del Paese. Questo è un Paese in cui nessuno sembra destinato a pagare per gli errori fatti; figurarsi se si vorrà tirare indietro pensando che non gli tocchi un posto superiore, una volta officiato, per raccomandazione, a qualsiasi incarico. Potrei continuare all'infinito, annoiandoti e deprimendomi.

Per questo, col cuore che soffre più che mai, il mio consiglio è che tu, finiti i tuoi studi, prenda la strada dell'estero. Scegli di andare dove ha ancora un valore la lealtà, il rispetto, il riconoscimento del merito e dei risultati. Probabilmente non sarà tutto oro, questo no. Capiterà anche che, spesso, ti prenderà la nostalgia del tuo Paese e, mi auguro, anche dei tuoi vecchi. E tu cercherai di venirci a patti, per fare quello per cui ti sei preparato per anni.

Dammi retta, questo è un Paese che non ti merita. Avremmo voluto che fosse diverso e abbiamo fallito. Anche noi. Tu hai diritto di vivere diversamente, senza chiederti, ad esempio, se quello che dici o scrivi può disturbare qualcuno di questi mediocri che contano, col rischio di essere messo nel mirino, magari subdolamente, e trovarti emarginato senza capire perché.

Adesso che ti ho detto quanto avrei voluto evitare con tutte le mie forze, io lo so, lo prevedo, quello che vorresti rispondermi. Ti conosco e ti voglio bene anche per questo. Mi dirai che è tutto vero, che le cose stanno proprio così, che anche a te fanno schifo, ma che tu, proprio per questo, non gliela darai vinta. Tutto qui. E non so, credimi, se preoccuparmi di più per questa tua ostinazione, o rallegrarmi per aver trovato il modo di non deludermi, assecondando le mie amarezze.

Preparati comunque a soffrire.

Gaming most popular online activity for tweens

LONDON - Nearly 80% of tweens spend the majority of their time on the internet playing games, according to a new report.

Children aged 8-14 might be the most digitally aware generation yet, having never experienced life without mobiles, internet and computers, but 74% of children still opt for a modern version of old fashioned entertainment such as gaming.

This is followed by 59% of children who most commonly use the web for homework.

Although 95% of the 3,020 children surveyed said the internet was important to them, 30% said they would still prefer communicating with friends face to face while 15% would prefer texting and only 14% would rather chat online. Nearly 10% prefer communicating using their mobile phone.

The study was conducted by The Walt Disney Company EMEA in Italy, France, Germany, the UK, Poland and Spain to analyse the core values across its target audience of eight- to 14-year-olds following the launch of its new Disney XD channel.

It showed 53% of children believe the internet improves their life by helping them talk to their friends outside school, while 44% said the internet makes it easier to stay in touch with friends.

The majority of children surveyed are financially aware, the report suggests, with 70% opting to save their pocket money over spending it and 64% of children aspiring to work for themselves rather than for someone else when they grow up.

The top five future professions amongst tweens are vet, teacher, footballer, doctor and police officer.

Nearly all children think it's important to the look after the planet, with 74% already recycling regularly.

Mi piace iniziare la settimana con alcuni paralleli tra calcio e gestione del personale. Non c'è molta differenza tra gestire uno spogliatoio di una squadra di calcio ed un ufficio d'azienda.

Prendiamo Josè Mourinho. JM è la personalità diffusa, offusca tutto e tutti.

Con l’arrivo di Josè Mourinho in Italia si sta assistendo a uno strano fenomeno di beatificazione ante mortem di un allenatore. Giornalisti utilizzano inchiostro a raffica sui giornali per commentare le uscite di JM. Tutti sono concordi nel trovare grandi aspetti di comunicazione nel personaggio e qualità tecniche ancora da confermare.

Beh, in realtà credo che JM stia esercitando una strategia di leadership molto intelligente, quella più adatta alla società Inter e alla struttura del team.

Mourihno in prima persona, sempre e comunque. E il tutto non fa altro che offuscare quello che si vede in campo, quella che dovrebbe essere la cosa più importante visto che Mourinho è un allentore di calcio, non un attore, non un personaggio esclusivamente mediatico.

L’Inter appare una formazione solida, robusta, al contempo sorniona e capace di ribaltare tutto e di segnare quando e come vuole, consapevole della propria forza e formata da giocatori di specchiato talento.

Ma ora in panchina c’è l’ipnotico Mourinho e tutto tace. E forse è tutto merito suo, delle sue esternazioni che distraggono dal campo e che in un certo senso proteggono i giocatori e la squadra intera? Come? Quale tecnica?

Potere e leadership.

Se intendiamo come leadership: attività di comando, in grado di prendere decisioni nei confronti degli altri e di dirigere le loro azioni verso un determinato traguardo.

Gli stili di leadership in psicologia:

- autoritario (accentratore e verticistico)

- democratico (partecipativo e condiviso)

- permissivo (“laissez-faire”, di delega piena).

Ogni stile ha vantaggi e svantaggi e non c’è in assoluto uno stile migliore dell’altro; ma la leadership va sempre riferita a una determinata situazione e al grado di maturazione psicologica dei collaboratori.

I 2 profili psicologici di leader:

- Il leader funzionale: centrato sul raggiungimento degli obiettivi e sulla realizzazione dei compiti; è attivo e dinamico; possiede idee e strategie per la soluzione dei problemi

- Il leader socioemotivo: impegnato a mantenere la coesione del gruppo; si impegna a favorire i rapporti interpersonali; propone soluzioni di conciliazione in caso di conflitto ed è pronto alla negoziazione e a rafforzare il senso di appartenenza del gruppo.

Un salto nel mondo dell'elettronica e dei giochi virtuali: è quello compiuto dalla Lego, storica azienda produttrice di mattoncini da costruzione, che alla fine dell'anno debutterà su internet con un gioco di ruolo collettivo.

I prossimi 'clienti' della casa dei mattoncini colorati non saranno più alacri carpentieri e geometri in sedicesimo, ma ragazzi seduti davanti ad uno schermo con le dita sulla tastiera, pronti ad entrare nel mondo di 'Lego Universe', il nuovo gioco collettivo che secondo il suo produttore Chris Sherland è un "misto tra Second Life, Club Penguin e World of Warcraft". Secondo i produttori, che l'hanno presentato al salone dell'elettronica in corso a Las Vegas, "Lego Universe è il primo gioco collettivo fondato sul tema del Lego, che ha dunque una dimensione sociale controllata e di tutta sicurezza per i bambini".

L'avventura, spiegano ancora gli ideatori, "si svolge in un mondo in 3D...dove esiste una forza del male che ha corrotto la fonte più pura dell'immaginazione e che tutti i partecipanti al gioco si impegnano a combattere, alleandosi". Lego aveva già prodotto giochi video con avventure basate sulle storie di Guerre stellari, Indiana Jones e Batman, ma la novità del nuovo programma è che può essere giocato in contemporanea da "milioni di internauti allo stesso tempo".

Game startups continued to score big investments in 2009

Game startups continued to score big investments in 2009, but the amount of money raised in the year fell considerably compared to 2008.

Our analysis shows that 97 game startups raised $600.5 million in 2009, down 36 percent from a year ago. Last year we tallied 112 companies that raised more than $936.8 million, not counting fundings with undisclosed amounts.

This year was looking pretty weak until Zynga scored $180 million in a deal with Russia’s Digital Sky Technologies. Zynga has more than 232 million monthly active users playing games such as FarmVille (pictured, right), and it makes money on its free games through the sale of virtual goods. Zynga’s funding actually beat out the biggest funding of last year: China’s 9You, which raised $100 million in the spring of 2008, long before the financial crisis hit in the fall of last year.

Clearly, valuations were down because of the recession. Were it not for Zynga’s big raise, 2009 would have been an abysmal year, down 55 percent from a year ago. This year, the average amount raised was $6.2 million, while last year it was $8.3 million.

These fundings mean lots of innovation ahead and continued employment for game industry veterans. We know not all of these companies will last. But the successful ones will create revenues, profits and jobs in the years ahead. We’ve ranked them here in order of the amount of money raised, and I’ve linked to our coverage of them. Fundings where the amounts weren’t made public are listed at the end. If you’ve heard of others, please note in the comments and we’ll add to the list. The list includes companies that raised funds in prior years but disclosed for the first time in 2009. It’s likely that some companies from last year’s list or this year’s have gone out of business. If so, let us know in the comments.

We’ll acknowledge our method is imperfect. As was the case last year, we have dozens of deals where we don’t know the exact amount raised (we have listed them alphabetically at the end). We know that OnLive raised a substantial round, but the exact amount wasn’t disclosed, and so it is not included in our figure for 2009. We expect that we’ll be revising the list upward as we add more deals that we didn’t know about in the coming weeks.

Giovedì scorso ho partecipato ad una tavola rotonda dedicata alle piattaforme gaming new media organizzata da Fabio Viola durante la due giorni allo IULM del Videogame Developer Conference

Vi riporto i passi più interessanti:

1. importanza dei microcrediti e delle microtransazioni nei social media e gaming

2. free to play come nuovo modello di business, gli utenti non saranno più disposti a pagare un titolo ma pagheranno per implementare personalizzazioni

Come sapete lunedì scorso ho tenuto un breve intervento al III EUROPEAN REGIONAL CONSULTATION FOR CHILD HELPLINES. Ringrazio Telefono Azzurro per l'invito e l'opportunità.

Brevemente... che cosa può fare una community come Habbo per Telefono Azzurro?

1. raccogliere informazioni dal "basso" ovvero partire dagli utenti, partire dai problemi e pensieri degli utenti

2. stimolare comunicazione - dibattito tra gli utenti

3. comunicare con lo stesso linguaggio degli utenti

4. stabilire un rapporto di fedeltà e fiducia tra operatore e utente

5. studiare il target

6. dal rapporto online informale utente - operatore arrivare ad un rapporto reale con incontro e risoluzione della problematica.

Who made who - La confusione tra le generazioni

Le classi sociali sono saltate, viviamo in una società dove al primo posto mettiamo le sensazioni. Tutto subito, sempre e comunque. Allora in questa grande confusione tra le generazioni diventa importante conoscere chi ci sta di fronte per soddisfarne i bisogni.

I Francesi la chiamano "La confusion des roles" ovvero sovrapposizione sociale tra i "sempre giovani" e i "giovani vecchi".

L'uomo, innamorato di una ragazza più giovane di ventanni, si sente ancora vitale, giovane e in forma; la donna, delusa dalla vita dei suoi coetanei e dagli stessi ricerca l'esperienza e l'uomo che ha già vissuto.

Diverso è l'aspetto delle metropoli, nei grandi centri abitati con diverse culture. Uomini giovani che non cercano la loro principessa ma piuttosto una regina mentre donne mature che cercano la giovinezza sessuale di avvenenti teenagers o rampanti 25enni.

Appunti dalla storia - Enrico Deaglio "Patria" 1978 - 2008

Chi mi conosce di persona sa che sono un appassionato di storia, particolarmente quella legata al nostro paese e all'ultimo secolo.

Uno dei libri che ho letto ultimamente è quello di Enrico Deaglio "Patria 1978 - 2008" libro bellissimo che narra gli avvenimenti italiani degli ultimi trent’anni.

La storia ci aiuta a capire quello che siamo oggi.

Ci sono delle parti del libro che mi hanno colpito moltissimo, in particolare queste:

LA "VIOLENZA ECONOMICA" E LE SUE CONSEGUENZE
Ben più imponente e sanguinosa (e senza alcun paragone negli altri paesi d'Europa) fu la violenza economica che ebbe come base di partenza la Sicilia, la Calabria e la Campania. Si scontrarono tra loro diverse fazioni criminali con l'obiettivo di raggiungere il "controllo del territorio" e l'accettazione dei propri metodi imprenditoriali e commerciali. Secondo le stime, tra il 1981 e il 1993 Palermi allineò mille uccisi; Catania, 1200; Agrigento, 500; Caltanissetta (concemtrati a Gela) 315; Trapani 200; 500 complessivamente nelle province di Messina, Ragusa, Siracusa ed Enna.
La guerra provocò nella sola provincia di Reggio Calabria 2000 morti dal 1981 al 1993. Napoli raggiunse lo stesso numero nello stesso periodo.
Le conseguenze economiche cambiarono il volto e i pesi del capitalismo italiano. Nelle tre regioni, e anche in Puglia, mafia, camorra, 'ndrangheta e un gruppo sempre più ristretto di capitalisti mafiosi (i nomi di Riina, Provenzano, Nuvoletta, Bardellino figuravano sull rivista Forbes tra quelli degli imprenditori più ricchi d'Italia) prese il possesso del mercato immobiliare, delle costruzioni edili pubbliche e private, di buona parte del commercio e del turismo. Peraltro l'enorme liquidità ottenuta con la raffinazione e la vendita dell'eroina permise a diversi gruppi criminali di investire in società sane, nel mercato azionario, nella proprietà immobiliare del Nord Italia, riducendo di molto lo spazio di manovra del capitalismo del Nord che era stato invece protagonista dello sviluppo degli anni cinquanta e sessanta. Il potere politico prese atto dell'avvenuta trasformazione.

UN OGGETTO SIMBOLO, LA BORSA
La borsa qui è intesa come oggetto e non come luogo dello scambio di azioni.
Durante la Prima repubblica, la borsa (un oggetto in genere in pelle più o meno pregiata) divenne simbolo del mistero. Si partì in realtà prima, con l'acquisto a Padova delle borse usate per gli attentati del 12 Dicembre 1969. Una borsa-valigia venne usata per l'attentato alla stazione di Bologna. In un doppiofondo di una borsa venne sequestrato il "Piano di rinascita democratica" alla figlia di Licio Gelli. Una delle cinque borse di Aldo Moro sparì misteriosamente dal luogo dell'attentato di via Fani. La borsa in cui il banchiere Roberto Calvi custodiva le sue carte più importanti venne ritrovata ed esposta in televisione, ma vuota. Scomparve anche dalla scena dell'attentato in via D'Amelio, la borsa del giudice Paolo Borsellino in cui il magistrato conservava un'agenda con le sue note personali, di colore rosso. Le borse, in genere ventiquattrore, vennero usate come mezzo principale per trasportare i soldi delle tangenti. "Portaborse" era il termine usato per definire il segretario particolare di un uomo politico.
